Eileen Schmitz, 101, died on Wednesday, August 17, 2022, at Bishop Drumm Nursing Center in Johnston, IA. A Funeral Mass is scheduled for 10:00 AM, Monday, August 22, 2022, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Grinnell with burial at Hazelwood Cemetery. A luncheon will be held at St. Mary Catholic Church following the burial. Eileen was born May 9, 1921, the daughter of John and Annie Gallagher Curran in Grinnell, IA. She was raised in Guernsey and graduated with 1931 class of Guernsey High school. Eileen went on to receive her nursing degree from Mercy School of Nursing in Burlington, IA. After college she moved to Chicago to begin her nursing career, before moving back to Iowa where she worked in Des Moines and eventually Grinnell to work at St. Francis Hospital and where she would meet her future husband, Martin. Eileen was united in marriage to Martin Schmitz on October 4, 1944 in Brooklyn, IA. They were blessed with four children; Patty, Larry, Ron, and Kate. In 1968, Eileen and Martin moved to Grinnell where she worked as a registered nurse at Grinnell College. Eileen took on a six-week volunteer position in Colorado Springs, CO that turned into a fifteen-year stay. She eventually moved back to the Des Moines area where she has resided since. Eileen was proud of her career as a registered nurse, over the years she has graced countless patients with her compassionate care. Eileen loved to travel, some of her most notable trips were visiting St. Lucia, where she was a volunteer nurse, the Holy Land, and Ireland. She enjoyed watching baseball, especially the St. Louis Cardinals. She held a strong faith in the Lord and was an active member of the St. Mary Catholic Church. Eileen is survived by her children, Patty Schmitz, Larry Schmitz, and Kate (Bill Peterson) Schmitz; grandchildren, Jennifer Stout, Mary Schmitz, Marty (Rachel) Schmitz, and Andy (Samantha) Schmitz; and great-grandchildren, Hattie Jenkins, Bridget and Delaney Berg, and Archer and Catherine Schmitz. She was preceded in death by her husband, Martin Schmitz and son, Ron Schmitz.
