Obituary

Eileen Larsen, age 97 of Grinnell, died on Wednesday, May 2, 2018 at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, May 5th at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Grinnell with Fr. Ron Hodges presiding. Interment will be at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Following the committal service, a reception will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Friday at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell and her family will greet friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Memorials may be designated to the St. Francis Manor Foundation, mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Memories and condolences may be shared with her family online at www.smithfh.com. Eileen Frances Schmitz was born the daughter of John P. Schmitz and Mae V. (Flanagan) Schmitz on July 30, 1920 on the family farm near Grinnell. She attended country school near her home and graduated from Grinnell High School with the class of 1937. Eileen began working at Merchants National Bank in Grinnell and later at the Grinnell Glove Factory. She was united in marriage to Robert "Bud" Larsen on November 25, 1946 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Grinnell. The couple operated a grain and livestock farm in Chester Township until their retirement in January of 1988. Eileen and Bud moved to Grinnell to make their home during retirement. She was a longtime member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Grinnell and the Altar and Rosary Society. Eileen's family and her faith were most important to her. She loved to visit with people and attending all the social functions at Seeland Park and St. Francis Manor. She was an excellent cook and looked forward to the holidays when she could prepare an amazing meal for her family. She loved the outdoors and spent countless hours helping Bud do chores on the farm and tending to her garden. Eileen is survived by her sons, Robert (Hannah) Larsen of Flower Mound, Texas and Brent (Gale) Larsen of Grinnell; two grandsons, Nick (Jennifer) Larsen of Double Oak, Texas and Erik (Leila) Larsen of Northlake, Texas; three great grandchildren, Max Larsen of Double Oak, Texas and Evie and Julia Moujaes of Northlake, Texas; and her sister, Betty (Clinton) Heishman of Grinnell. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and siblings, Mary Donohoe and Don Donohoe.
