Obituary

Edgar Clark Anderson, 82, of Grinnell died September 12, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral services are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Monday, September 16, at the Grinnell Christian Church with Rev. John Epperson, retired, officiating. Pianist will be his granddaughter, Joryn Anderson. Pallbearers will be his grandchildren, Jason Anderson, Sara Nielsen, Nikki Lucero, Brett Van Soelen, Ryan Mertens, Lexie Roderick and Christopher Jones. Honorary Pallbearers will be his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Burial with military honors will be in Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Sunday at the Smith Funeral Home with the family present from 3:00 to 5:00 Sunday afternoon. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Grinnell Christian Church or Mayflower Human Needs Fund. Edgar was born July 29, 1931, in Grinnell, the son of Clark and Areatha Shill Anderson. He was raised in Grinnell and attended school in the Grinnell School District. Following his education he was employed at the Grinnell Shoe Company. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served in combat infantry during the Korean Conflict. On July 31, 1954, he was united in marriage to Beverly Long, in Cedar Rapids. The couple made their home in Grinnell and he was employed for over 42 years at the Donaldson Company in Grinnell. He retired in 1996. He was a member of the Grinnell Christian Church. Edgar held a great love and devotion for his family. Through his actions, he instilled a great work ethic and strong family values. He enjoyed all sports and especially playing golf. He also enjoyed card games on the computer. He was an avid Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes fan. More important was his passion for following all his children's and grandchildren's activities. He was their biggest fan! He loved music, dancing, snacking on cashews and drinking Pepsi. Survivors include his wife, Bev of Grinnell; seven children, Mike (Saundy) Anderson of Grinnell, Jackie (Jack) Morrison of Grinnell, Denny (Robin) Anderson of Evergreen, Colorado, Marla (Rod) Van Soelen of Pella, Shari (Mike) Mertens, Julie (Mike) Roderick and Jennifer (John) Williams , all of Grinnell; one brother, Wilbur "Webb" (Bev) Anderson of Grinnell; 34 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Margaret Walker and Lucille Anderson; and four brothers, Robert, Harold, Everett and William Anderson.
