Earl was born August 28, 1912, in Malcom, the son of Louis and Julia Grabenstein Engelbarts. He was raised on the family farm near Malcom and attended rural school near his home. On June 28, 1943, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Genevieve Minear, in Grinnell and they continued to live on the Engelbarts farm, recently honored by the State of Iowa as a Century Farm. Earl lived his entire life on the farm, a span of almost 100 years! Earl enjoyed the day to day activity and held lots of ideas in maintaining a successful farm operation. He knew the value of hard work. He was an avid reader, enjoyed solving puzzles and fixing things. His travels took him to many fairs including local and state and he enjoyed taking day trips driving through the countryside near his home. He especially enjoyed attending school functions of his children and grandchildren. Earl never knew a stranger and welcomed family and friends to his home. Survivors include four children, Bonita (Bob) Martin of Mitchell, South Dakota, and Barbara (Verl) Shook, Roger Engelbarts and Dennis Engelbarts, all of Malcom; eight grandchildren, Wendy Minear, Christopher Young, Heather Brown, Scott Shook and Anthony, Krista, Amber and Katie Engelbarts; eight great-grandchildren, Eric and Cruz Casados, Jesse and Lacey Young, Dylan Carter, Joslyn Allen, Reece Brown and Addison Lee Engelbarts; and two great-great-grandchildren, Xiah and XaraLynn Casados. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife in 2007; and two sons, Carl in 1987 and Gene in 2005.
