Dwight was born on October 1,1921, in Lucas County, Iowa to Daniel and Virgie (Dyer) George. He was raised in Lucas County and loved to be on the farm. He attended Chariton High School in Chariton, Iowa.
On January 29,1941, he married Martha Mumford in Princeton, Missouri. Following their marriage, the couple lived in Chariton, Iowa, and he began his career with Rock Island Motor Transit Company. During World War II, he served with the United States Army in the South Pacific Theater from 1942 to 1946. Dwight and Martha had one son, Robert Duane, who was born on September 30,1948. That same year, the family moved to Grinnell and he continued his association with the Rock Island Company until his retirement in 1979. Because of Martha's declining health, he retired to be close to home and help care for her. In 1980, Dwight took the job as Director of Maintenance for Mayflower Home in Grinnell. Martha passed away in 1989, and he retired from Mayflower Home in 1991 for health reasons. He was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church and a member of the American Legion in Grinnell.
Dwight loved children. He always looked forward to being with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and enjoyed taking them to the Blank Park Zoo and Adventureland in Des Moines. He bought a camping trailer and parked near a pond with timber so the children could watch the deer come by. Dwight was constantly sharing to make people happy and that made him happy. He loved carving animals from Iowa coal. He also enjoyed watching railroad trains. He made numerous China hutches from oak in his wood workshop, and sold them at cost. Most of all, his first love was for his 96 real antique cars you drive. He was a very caring man and had friends all over Iowa who admired him for his many abilities. He liked to take chances whether he made money or not. He did really well for himself.
Dwight is survived by his three granddaughters, Martha LeeAnn Bietz, Mary Kay (Troy) Pickrell and Victoria Jane and Kevin Morris, "The George Girls" of Greeley, CO; 12 great grandchildren; 25 great great grandchildren; and his daughter-in-law, Nancy Stevens of Denver, CO. He was preceded in death by his son, Robert George; his wife, Martha; his parents, Daniel and Virgie George; his brother, Paul George; his sister, Ruth Johnson; and his brother-in-law, Harry Johnson.
