Douglas R. Meeker, 70, of Grinnell died on October 28, 2022, at UnityPoint Grinnell Regional Medical Center.
A private family graveside service and burial will be held Friday afternoon, November 4, at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell with Pastor Matt Oleson, Newburg Chester Church, officiating. A public luncheon and continued fellowship with the Meeker family will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the Newburg Chester Church in Newburg.
Visitation with the Meeker family present will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 Thursday afternoon, November 3, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell.
Memorial contributions may be designated to the Doug Meeker Family Memorial Fund where the funds will be distributed to various organizations of the families choosing.
Doug was born on February 17, 1952, in Marshalltown, the son of Earl Ray and Esther Schmoranz Meeker. He moved to Grinnell with his family in 1962 and was a 1970 graduate of Grinnell High School. He furthered his education at General Motors University of Automotive Management and received a degree in Criminal Law from DMAAC. He also was a graduate of Dale Carnegie.
On October 14, 1972, he was united in marriage to Patricia Wall, at Herrick Chapel, Grinnell College. The couple lived in Newburg and Grinnell prior to moving to the Des Moines area in 1995. They returned to Grinnell in 2016.
Doug was employed in automotive management for 35 years, including Wes Finch Auto Plaza in Grinnell, Bob Brown Auto in Des Moines, and Greg Young Chevrolet in Norwalk. Doug and Patty also owned and operated an executive recruiting company "Heartland Career Partners" for six years. Most recently, he was employed at UnityPoint Grinnell Regional Medical Center as a greeter in different departments and also as a public safety officer.
He was a member of Green Meadow West HOA, served on the DMACC Automotive Education Program board, past president Chevrolet "only the best club," and president of the Legacy HOA.
Doug is survived by his wife, Patty of Grinnell; one son, Jeremy (Jennifer) Meeker of Baxter; two grandsons, Mason and Kaden Meeker of Baxter; his sister, Dana Moyer of Grinnell; two nephews, Matt (Abby) and Spencer (Brittany) Moyer of Grinnell; and extended family residing in Colorado. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Donna Odegaard.
