Obituary

Dorothy Jean Davis, 88, of Grinnell died on January 5, 2022, at the Grinnell Health Care Center. Funeral services are scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 12th, at the Smith Funeral Home, with Rev. Jim Dotson of Montezuma officiating. Pallbearers will be Lonnie Beam, Baleigh Harms, Levi Harms, Allison Schlatter, Aaron Versendaal, and Tanner Wignall. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Visitation with the Davis family present will be held two hours prior to the funeral service from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be designated to the Grinnell Fire Department or Hospice of the Midwest. Dorothy was born on April 6, 1933, in Tilton, Iowa, the daughter of Lavern Keith and Maxine Opal Calhoun Ladely. She was raised in Searsboro and received her education in the Searsboro School District. On September 24, 1949, she was united in marriage to Arnold Lee Thon, in Brooklyn, and to this union they had one daughter, Sherry. They were later divorced in 1964. She was married to Keith Wilson Davis on July 29, 1966, in Rock Island, Illinois. The couple lived in Grinnell, later Livonia, Missouri, and then returned to Grinnell. For the past year she had been a resident at the Grinnell Health Care Center. Dorothy was a caring person that loved her family, offering help wherever she could. For many years, she was employed at DeLong's Sportswear as a supervisor. She knew the value of hard work and always held a great work ethic. Dorothy liked to be in charge, she was the "Boss!" Dorothy was a member of the Grinnell Eagles Auxiliary and a Grinnell Fire Department Tag-A-Long. She enjoyed camping, especially at Diamond Lake and while attending the Bluegrass Festival in Livonia. Music, dancing with Keith, and listening to the Howard Davis Band were among her favorite pastimes. Later, Dorothy and Keith enjoyed listening to music at Rock Creek. She enjoyed socializing with family and friends and attending family reunions. She enjoyed crocheting, quilting, and reading. She was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan! Dorothy is survived by her husband Keith of Grinnell; three daughters, Sherry Beam of Des Moines, Debra (Tim) Bowers of Wells, Minnesota, and Kelli (Jim Chedester) Davis of Grinnell; one sister, Dianna Wansley of North Carolina; six grandchildren, Lonnie Beam and Danielle Beam, both of Des Moines, Allison (Craig) Schlatter of Winterset, Aaron (Kelly) Versendaal of Olin, Levi (Chelsey McNew) Harms of Newton, and Baleigh Harms of West Des Moines; seven great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Melvin and Glen Ladely; and one sister, Marilyn "Tootie" Badger.
