Obituary

Dorothy Clifton, 80, of Grinnell died Sunday, August 21, 2005, at the Mayflower Home Health Care Center in Grinnell. Funeral services for Mrs. Clifton were held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. Len Eberhart, pastor of the Grinnell United Methodist Church, officiating. Margaret Wheeler was organist. Pallbearers were Kimberly, David and Randy Cooper and Joel, Rochelle, and Erin Clifton. Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association. The daughter of Morgan and Viola Wentzel Hicks, she was born August 11, 1925, in Malcom. She was raised in Malcom and was a graduate of Malcom High School. She was married to Kenneth J. Clifton October 20, 1946, in Brooklyn and the couple made their home in Grinnell. She was employed for several years at the Five & Dime Store and later Clifton's Park & Eat. In 1957, she began working at Jerry's By-Lo Grocery Store and remained there until 1989. She then was employed at Food For Less until her retirement in 1996. She was a long-time member and very active with the Rebekah Lodge. Survivors include two children, Sandy (Larry) Cooper and Tom (Nancy) Clifton of Grinnell; three sisters, Nedra (Art Goeke) Neville and Shirley (Jerry) Carter of Grinnell and Ruth (Tom) Varnum of Remmington Beach, Florida; five grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kenneth; one granddaughter, Teresa Cooper; one brother, Morgan Hicks, Jr.; and two sisters, Lorna Hall and Letha Hicks.
