Doris VanderLeest, 85, of Grinnell died on November 14, 2020, at the Mayflower Community Health Care Center in Grinnell.
A private family funeral service has been scheduled for Wednesday, November 18th, at the Trinity Lutheran Church, near Grinnell, with Pastor Catherine Burroughs officiating. Organist will be Susie Edelen. Burial will follow at the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery.
The service will be live streamed at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday November 18th on the Smith Funeral Home Facebook page.
A public visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 17th at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. The VanderLeest family will not be present.
Memorial contributions may be designated to the Trinity Lutheran Church.
Doris was born on March 28, 1935, in Brooklyn, the daughter of Lester C. and Clara Diehm Foster. She was raised in Grinnell and was a 1952 graduate of Grinnell High School. After graduation, she began working for Don Louden and Chuck Manly in their law firm(s) and subsequently for Don Louden at his law firm in Grinnell, a career spanning 30 years.
On January 3, 1968, she was united in marriage to Robert D. VanderLeest, at the Trinity Lutheran Church. The couple made their home in Grinnell where they raised their two children. Doris continued her employment at Grinnell High School and later at the Grinnell Herald Register. During tax season she assisted at Charnetski, Olson & Lacina Law Firm.
Doris was an active member and treasurer at Trinity Lutheran Church. She volunteered at Grinnell Regional Medical Center Gift Shop and for many years was an election volunteer. She enjoyed attending family sporting events, was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan and enjoyed watching NASCAR with Jeff Gordon as her favorite driver. She loved spending time with her family, and she knew the value of hard work.
Survivors include her two children, Jodi (Tom) Lannom of Chanhassen, Minnesota and Joel (Jen) VanderLeest of Grinnell; five grandchildren, Katelyn and Khloe Lannom, and Taylor, Dylan and Mason VanderLeest; and two siblings, Jim (Bev) Foster of Grinnell and Janet (Duane) Neff of Grinnell. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Bob in 2014.
