Doris Sleeuwenhoek, 85, died on Thursday, May 29, 2008 at the Grinnell Regional Medical Center. A private graveside service will be held at a later date in Hazelwood. Memorials may be directed to the Stewart Library or to Grinnell Regional Hospice and sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home. Doris Marie Sleeuwenhoek was born on November 9, 1922, the daughter of Martin and Mae Elmore Paulson in Jasper County, Iowa. After graduating from Grinnell High School in 1940, she moved to California, where she worked x-raying airplane parts. She then moved to St. Charles, Illinois and did office work. She married Lawrence Sleeuwenhoek on January 26, 1946, after he returned from the service in World War II. Together they farmed and raised two daughters Bette Jo and Lin Sue. They purchased the family farm in 1959 near Malcom. Doris enjoyed making and sewing clothes for her daughters and herself. She was very active on the farm; doing chores, gardening, painting buildings, and helping plant the harvest. She loved to play cards with family and friends. She did all the book work and helped sell Pioneer Seed corn for several years. They retired in 1986, but stayed on the farm until they moved to Seeland Park in 1995. In 2004, Lawrence and Doris moved to St. Francis Manor. She is survived by her two daughters, Bette (Ray) Wood of Swisher, Iowa and Lin Sleeuwenhoek Sierra of Seattle, Washington; one grandson, Bryan (Susan) Wood of Riverside, Iowa; one great grandson, Patrick Wood of Riverside, Iowa; three sisters, Ruth Taylor, Genevieve Bailey, and Phyllis Saunders; and one brother, Keith Paulson all of Grinnell. Doris was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 2007; and three brothers, Ross, Howard and Merle Paulson. Memorials may be directed to the Grinnell Senior Center or to Grinnell Regional Hospice.
