Doris M. Hohl, age 92, of Malcom, died on Thursday, July 18, 2013, at her home. A celebration of her life will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 22, 2013, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. Pallbearers will be Steven Hohl, Rich Foster, Jeffrey Hohl, Paul Naumann, Sam Crabtree and Rick Swanson. Interment will be in Ivy Hill Cemetery in Malcom. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Smith Funeral Home with the family present to greet friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Memorials may be designated in her name to the Malcom United Methodist Church and mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Memories and condolences may be shared with her family at www.smithfh.com. Doris May (Jeffrey) Hohl was born the daughter of Thomas S. Jeffrey and Irma M. (Jacob) Jeffrey on December 21, 1920, in Grinnell, Iowa. She was raised in Grinnell and graduated from Grinnell High School with the class of 1938. She attended American Institute of Business College in Des Moines and later worked for Allied Insurance in Des Moines. She was united in marriage to Melvin LaVerne Hohl on March 30, 1952, at the Malcom United Methodist Church in Malcom, Iowa. The couple purchased a farm northeast of Malcom in 1954 where they had lived all of their married lives. Doris worked at several local businesses including: Graham's Department Store, Grinnell General Hospital, Bramer's Pharmacy, Stadium's Unlimited, and General Telephone Company. Doris was a loving woman who devoted her life to providing for her family and her church. She supported her children in all of their activities, including Poweshiek County 4-H and Boy Scouts. She was an excellent pie maker who used all of the ingredients from her large garden to make the pies. She was a member of the National Rural Letter Carrier's Ladies Auxiliary and Malcom United Methodist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher. She is survived by her children, Wayne (Carlene) Hohl of Altoona, Iowa, Daryl Hohl of Malcom, Muriel (Paul) Naumann of Iowa City, Iowa, Martin (Kathy) Hohl of Westerville, Ohio, and Kay Crabtree of Land O'Lakes, Florida; her grandchildren, Karla, Renee, Jeff, Jenna, Sam and Katie; step grandchildren, Angela and Cynthia; and step great grandchildren, Katie, J.D., Jim, Jacob and Emily. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 39 years, Melvin Hohl on May 22, 1991.
