Doris Brown, 97, of Malcom, died August 31, 2014, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center. Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 4, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Pastor Keith Morrison, Grinnell Regional Hospice Chaplain, officiating. Denise Baustian will be the organist. Pallbearers will be Linda Brody, Matthew Brown, Will Brown, Shannon Garringer, Jeff McCammant, Deborah Miller and Elizabeth Rindal. Honorary bearers will be Bridgette Brown, Timothy Brown (dec.), Charles Cummings, Victor Heffel, Gregory McCammant, Michael McCammant, Victoria Smith, Lonnie Strong and Scott Strong. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Visitation will be held Thursday morning prior to the funeral service from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be directed to Grinnell Regional Medical Center. Doris was born November 19, 1916, in Montezuma, the daughter of Raymond L. and Gussie Stevens Johnson. She was raised in Montezuma and was a 1935 graduate of Montezuma High School. On March 5, 1936, she was united in marriage with Louis Marion Brown, in Newton. The couple farmed near Randall, Iowa for a brief time, northwest of Grinnell for five years and near Lake Park, Iowa for five years. After World War II, they returned to the area and farmed northeast of Grinnell and then in 1951 they moved to their present farm near Malcom. Most recently she was a resident at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. Doris loved her life on the farm, raising her family and attending to everyday farm chores. She took great pride in home. She loved flowers, attending to her two large gardens and canning her produce. She was a great baker and was known for her delicious cakes, pies and bread. She enjoyed reading, sewing, quilting and watching television shows, including Lawrence Welk, Judge Judy and What's My Line. Most importantly though was her love for her family! Survivors include seven children, Roberta McCammant of Marshalltown, Barbara Heffel of Greeley, Colorado, JoAnn Dearinger of Knoxville, Carl Brown of Des Moines, Larry (Judith) Brown of Grinnell, Marion (Betty) Brown of Kirksville, Missouri and Ronald Brown of Grinnell; two sisters, Marlys Hopwood of Grinnell and Louise Sanders of Springfield, Missouri; 13 grandchildren, Linda Brody, Bridgette, Matthew and Will Brown, Charles Cummings, Shannon Garringer, Victor Heffel, Gregory, Jeff and Michael McCammant, Deborah Miller, Elizabeth Rindal and Victoria Smith; 22 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1988; four brothers, Carmon, Farrell, Raymond and Gerald Johnson; six sisters, Elaine Kirby, Betty Harbert, Ina Mae Boyd, Marveen Wilson and two childhood sisters; one grandson, Timothy Brown; and one great-grandson, Samuel Cummings.
