Doris was born on April 27, 1921, south of Kellogg, Iowa on the family farm to Earl and Esther Braley Tough. She was raised near Kellogg and attended Buena Vista #1 country school near her home. She graduated from Kellogg High School with the class of 1940. She was united in marriage to Clair Edward "Barney" Bahrenfuse on November 9, 1946, at the Pleasant View Church southwest of Kellogg. The couple farmed east of Kellogg all of their lives, where Doris was a homemaker. She was a lifelong member of the Pleasant View Methodist Church near Kellogg, where her mother was also a lifelong member. She was a faithful member and volunteer at the Kellogg Historical Museum and was a longtime member of the Tuesday Quilters group. The couple enjoyed traveling and wintered in Plant City and Dover, Florida since the mid 1970's. She held a passion for quilting and enjoyed collecting hickory nuts and walnuts in the fall and sharing the finished product with her family and friends. Doris is survived by her children, Robert "Barney" (Suzanne Castello) Bahrenfuse of Grinnell, Iowa and Carol (Orville) Ohm of Alden, Minnesota; four grandchildren; three great grandchildren; her sister Mary Parsons of Kellogg, Iowa; and her sister-in-law Edith Lee of Riverton, Wyoming. Doris was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Clair E. Bahrenfuse in 2004; and her brothers Robert and Donald Tough. Memorials may be directed to the Kellogg Historical Museum, the Westfield Cemetery Association, or to the Pleasant View Methodist Church and sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home.
