After high school, Donn worked on the family farm before serving his country by joining the United States Air Force in 1955. He was stationed at Whitman Air Force Base in Knob Noster, Missouri, where he served as a jet engine mechanic. Donn dedicated four years to active duty and four additional years in the reserves.
