Donald L. Strand, age 98 of Grinnell and formerly of Gilman, died on Sunday, May 10, 2020, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. A private family graveside service will be held at 11:00 am, Thursday, May 14, 2020 at Chester Cemetery north of Grinnell with Rev. Dave Crow, pastor of the Grinnell United Methodist Church, officiating. Memorials may be designated to the Chester Cemetery Association, mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Donald LeRoy Strand was born the son of Alfred and Kathrine (Engleson) Strand on June 24, 1921 in rural Chester Township in Poweshiek County north of Grinnell, Iowa. He was raised on the family farm north of Grinnell and graduated from Gilman High School in 1939. Don farmed in the Chester Township until 1967, when he moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He worked at Kings Crown Inn as a desk clerk and night auditor and later was the equipment manager for the University of Central Florida in Orlando. He retired in 1986 and moved back to Gilman. He worked part time as a janitor at the Central Christian Church in Marshalltown. He attended church at the Gilman United Methodist Church and later at the Grinnell United Methodist Church. Don was always there for his nieces and nephews, who loved him dearly. Don is survived by his nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings, Clair Strand, Kenneth Strand, Ralph Strand, Alice Sutton, Theresa Beason, and Genevieve Russell.
