Obituary

Donald Phillip "Barney" Latham, 91, of Grinnell, died on May 1, 2020, at his home. A funeral service is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 7th, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Perry Hunter, (family friend), officiating. Pallbearers will be Monte Latham, Mark, Grant, Madeline, and Jonathan Plaster, and Tim Benson. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Memorial contributions may be designated to UnityPoint Grinnell Regional Hospice or to the Wounded Warrior Project. Don was born February 28, 1929 to Barnett and Maud Bennington Latham of Grinnell, Iowa. He was raised in the rural Grinnell area and was a 1947 graduate of Grinnell/Newburg High School. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1950 with seven of his friends. He started his Navy experience in San Diego for boot camp. He then served his country on the USS Thompson DMS 38 during the Korean War from 1951 to 1954. Don returned to Grinnell after his Navy service and was united in marriage to Shirley Iola Tharp on April 1, 1956, at the Little Brown Church in the Vale. He was employed by Donaldson Muffler Plant for 37 years and farmed with his dad and brother. Don & Shirley continued to live in Grinnell and raised their two children, Debra Jean Latham Plaster and Monte Eugene Latham. They were later blessed with three grandchildren, Grant, Madeline and Jonathan Plaster. Don loved his family and had hobbies that included fishing, woodworking, gardening, walnut picking and his many trips in the travel trailer with friends to camp in Northern Iowa and fish for trout. Don and Shirley also enjoyed taking organized bus tours to New York City, Cape Cod, Washington D.C., South Carolina and California. They also took a Caribbean Cruise to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. Don is survived by his wife of 64 years, Shirley of Grinnell; two children, Debra Plaster (Mark) of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Monte Latham of Coon Rapids, Minnesota; three grandchildren, Grant, Madeline and Jonathan. He was preceded in death by his parents and two siblings Peggy Weaver and Laird Latham.
