Donald Lee Matthews, 81, of Grinnell died on December 7, 2021, at UnityPoint Grinnell Regional Medical Center.
A private family service will be held at date yet to be determined.

Don was born on August 17, 1940, in Atlantic, Iowa, the son of Donald "Bus" and Lorraine Scherdin Matthews. He was raised in Atlantic and was a 1958 graduate of Atlantic High School.
On March 14, 1959, he was united in marriage to Patricia Joan Rasmussen, in Audubon, Iowa; a union of 62 years.
Don was a store manager of various retail and department stores in several communities in Iowa prior to moving to Grinnell to manage Grahams Department Store. In 1982, the couple moved to Spencer, later Carroll, and then Beatrice, Nebraska where he continued to manage retail stores. The couple retired to Grinnell in 2013.
Don held a strong passion for cars and strictly Ford models, with the Ford Mustang among his favorites. He collected toy cars, enjoyed working on and cussing at cars in his garage, and attending NASCAR races. Spending time with his family, attending sporting and school events, and summer vacations were always a joy for him.
Don is survived by his wife, Patty of Grinnell; one son, Steve Matthews of Omaha; one daughter, Jana (Payton) Byers of Kellogg; eight grandchildren, Eric Matthews of Denver, Samantha (Don) Price of Omaha, Troy (Audrey) Matthews of St. Louis, Lexie (Andy) Henderson of Grinnell, Cody (Melissa) Byers of Holiday Lake, Kylie (Nathan) Vu of Ankeny, Kasey (John) Bennett of Omaha, and Koy Matthews of Omaha; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son Todd Matthews in 2019; a daughter-in-law, Darla Matthews in 2020; and a sister, Shirley Matthews.
