Obituary

Donald Phillip Cadden, 90, a longtime resident of Grinnell, IA, passed away peacefully June 18, 2022, at Mill Pond Senior Living Community in Ankeny, IA. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 am on Friday, June 24, 2022 at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. Interment will be at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. A reception will follow at St. Mary Catholic Church. A visitation will be held at 4:00 pm on Thursday, June 23, 2022 at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the family present to receive friends from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm. Memories and condolences may be shared with his family online www.smithfh.com. Donald was born in Brooklyn, IA on February 11, 1932, the son of Patrick and Eldora (Dowell) Cadden. He attended Brooklyn High School and graduated with the class of 1949. After a semester at St. Ambrose College, Donald enlisted in the Air Force in 1951 and was honorably discharged in 1954. Following his military service, he worked at General Telephone in the accounting department, retiring as an Accounting Manager after 33 years of service. On June 14, 1958, Donald married Lois French in Colfax, IA. The couple had two children together, Michael and Lisa. Family was an important part of Donald's life. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed playing golf, woodworking, fishing, feeding squirrels, doing yard work, cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes and putting up Christmas lights. He collected coins, and was well known for his love of chocolate Hershey kisses. Donald is survived by his two children; Michael (Connie) Cadden of Eden Prairie, MN, Lisa (John) Brodersen of Ankeny, IA; five granchildren, David (Sarah) Cadden of Victoria, MN, Matthew Cadden of Eden Praire, MN, Allison Cadden of Eden Praire, MN, Nicole (Scott) Hornberg of Ankeny, IA, and Ryan Brodersen of Hong Kong; his sister, Colleen McDonald of Cedar Rapids, IA; his brother-in-law, Byron Johnston of Mitchellville, IA; sister-in-law, Margaret Cadden of Williamsburg, IA and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lois Cadden; grandson, Daniel Cadden; sisters, Margaret Sandberg and Dorothy Dodson; and brother, Raymond Cadden.
