Donald L. Butler, age 74, of Gilman, died Friday, October 14, 2005, at his home.
A funeral service for Don Butler will be held 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Rev. Ron Rice and Rev. Susan Leatham officiating. Interment will be at Prairie View Cemetery in Gilman with military rites.
Visitation hours will be held from 12 noon to 8 p.m. on Monday at the Smith Funeral Home with the family present from 6 ' 8 p.m. on Monday evening.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Grinnell Regional Hospice.
Donald was born the son of Ronald Logston and Ruby Birk on February 20, 1931, in Iowa City, Iowa. He was adopted by Dewey Butler and Alma Johnson in April of 1931. After Alma's death, Dewey later married Faye Michaels, who had a daughter Dixie (Michaels) Keenan. Donald was raised and educated in Montezuma, Iowa.
Don joined the Army Air Forces in 1947, at Fort Sheridan, Illinois. He served his country until 1950, where he was honorably discharged at March Air Force Base in California. He lived in Riverside, California and attended the University of California for one year. In 1973, he moved to Grinnell and was united in marriage to Gladys Springer on September 29, 1973, at Oak Grove Friends Church south of Grinnell.
Don performed various jobs, working at the lumber yard, Miracle Recreation, and owning a roofing business. In 1981, the couple moved to California and attended Apartment Manager's School. They managed apartment complexes for ten years before retiring to Gilman in 1991. The couple owned and operated a four unit apartment building. Don also kept busy working at Newton Motel, tilling gardens, mowing yards, and distributing meals on wheels for four years.
Don was a member of the Grinnell and Gilman American Legion, and Lions International, where he held several offices in the Lions Club. Don enjoyed making lamps from flower pots. He loved his grandchildren and great grandchildren dearly. He would tell them tall tales and would talk to them in his Donald Duck voice.
Donald is survived by his wife Gladys of Gilman; his children Gary (Barb) Pagel of New Sharon, Richard (Betty) Pagel of Brooklyn, Rebbecca (Dean) Roth of Brooklyn, Cheri (Allard) Jacobsen of Pleasantville, Iowa, Robin (Frank) Wilcox of Gilman, Christina (Roxie Peterson) Myers of Winthrop, Iowa, and Corrina Todd of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; 13 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; and his sister Laverna Kiefer of Waterloo, Iowa.
Donald was preceded in death by his biological and adopted parents; his grandson Ryan Pagel; and his sister Dixie Keenan.
