Memorials: Don L. Gersdorf Memorial Fund, PO BOX 368, Grinnell, IA 50112. Don was born the son of William and Inez (Gull) Gersdorf on December 13, 1928 in Marshalltown, Iowa. He was raised in Marshalltown and he graduated from Marshalltown High School with the class of 1936. He worked for his father at the Gersdorf Sand and Gravel Pit and then at Fisher Governor Company in Marshalltown. At the age of 18, he enlisted in the United States Navy and he was stationed at Adak Island, Alaska and Winter Harbour, Maine. Don was united in marriage to Dorothy Lowry on June 9, 1951 in Marshalltown. They moved to Grinnell in 1966 and he worked for Grinnell Beverage as a sales manager for twenty-six years. He also performed landscaping for the Grinnell Nursery and later as a maintenance technician for St. Francis Manor. Don was an avid hunter and outdoorsman who claimed the outdoors was his church. He was very mechanically inclined as he was a gunsmith for 45 years and a talented woodworker. His other enjoyments included spending time with residents at St. Francis Manor and reading military history, guns and hunting books. Don is survived by his wife of fifty-nine years, Dorothy Gersdorf of Grinnell; his sons, Kim Gersdorf of Des Moines, IA, Dirk (Rhonda) Gersdorf of Grinnell and Erin (Sharon) Gersdorf of Grinnell; 9 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; and his sisters, Joan (Charlie) Kellogg of LeGrand, IA and Pat Long of Marshalltown, IA. Don was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Shirley Gersdorf in infancy; and a brother, Larry Gersdorf.
