Dennis Lee McCammant, 61, of Stratford, and formerly of the Grinnell area, died on March 17, 2021, at Care Initiative in Stratford.
A public visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 23rd, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell.
A private family burial will be determined at a later date at Ivy Hill Cemetery in Malcom.
Memorial contributions may be designated to the family of Dennis McCammant.
Dennis was born on December 31, 1959, in Burlington, Iowa the son of Richard Lee McCammant and Evelyn Jean Osmond. He moved with his family to Grinnell in 1962, when he was 3 years old. While growing up he attended schools in Malcom, Brooklyn and Grinnell.
Dennis joined the United States Army in October of 1977, where he also received his G.E.D. Upon discharge from the Army, he re-enlisted in the United States Navy and served on the USS Kitty Hawk while based in San Diego and later the USS Saratoga at Cecil Field, near Jacksonville, Florida.
On September 12, 1987, he was united in marriage to Alice Geneva Noble, in Fort Meyers, Florida. To this union, he happily gained two step-daughters, Kristina and Amy. The couple later moved to Eldora and on August 7, 2019, he moved to Stratford Specialty Care where he was cared for his muscular dystrophy, which was diagnosed while he was serving in the military.
Dennis was always protective of his family and his love for them was unconditional. He held a keen sense of humor. He loved movies, especially Star Trek movies, watching military related TV shows, and the WWE. He was an avid football fan of the Minnesota Vikings and Iowa Hawkeyes; and enjoyed his rides on his Kawasaki motorcycle.
Survivors include his wife, Alice of Eldora; two step-daughters, Kristina (Mike) Bennett and Amy (Jerry Garrett) Dupee, both of Eldora; his mom, Jean McCammant of Fort Wayne, Indiana; one sister, Mary Ellen Bird of Brooklyn; seven grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; two nephews; and one niece. He was preceded in death by his dad, Richard; one brother, Mark; and one sister, Lori Miler.
