On June 1, 2006, Delmar W. Howard, 84 was peacefully called from his life on earth to join with his Savior and beloved wife, Margie. Delmar, a life-long resident of Iowa, was born in Laurel, IA, November 2, 1921. He graduated from Laurel High School and served his country in the Army during WWII. A highlight in recent years was his trip to Washington, D.C. with his son, Kevin also an Army Veteran, and grandson, Dustin Howard, who is currently serving in the Army in Germany. Following his discharge from the Army, Delmar met and married Margie, his wife of 57 years. He was active in his church and sang in the church choir most of his life. Until 1985, he farmed in the Laurel and Newburg areas when he retired and moved into Grinnell. In the years before and after retirement, Delmar and Margie enjoyed many trips by car, bus or plane, visiting family and friends; a highlight was their driving trip to Alaska in 1999. After Margie's death in 2003, Delmar continued to live in their home, enjoy his gardening and trying new dessert recipes until moving into the Mayflower Home, December, 2005. Delmar is survived by his four children: Doris Fitzgerald and husband Bob and five boys) of Springfield, MO; Carole Sampson and husband John of Grinnell, their son and daughter and granddaughter, Kevin Howard and wife Jackie of Urbandale, IA, their two sons; and Sharon Hansen and husband Tom of Iowa City, IA, their two daughters and son. Also surviving are Delmar's oldest sister, Margaret Fuller of Marshalltown, his brother George Howard of Marshalltown, his brother, Donald Howard of Laurel, IA and sister, Ruth Howard of Hoffman Estates, IL. He was preceeded in death by his parents, James A. and Dora E. Howard, his sisters, Madalene Speas, Virginia Murdock, Anzel Kinnaird, one brother, Kenneth Howard and one grandson, Jeff Sampson. Visitation will be Sunday, June 11, 4-6PM with Funeral Services Monday, June12, 10:30AM at Smith Funeral Home and private burial to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Delmar's honor to any of the following: Grinnell Hospice, Newburg Chester Church, or the Newburg American Legion .
