Debra Johnson, 46, of Prairie Village, KS passed away July 25, 2022 at Menorah Medical Center in Overland Park, KS. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am, Tuesday, August 2, 2022 at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell, IA. A visitation will be held at 9:00 am, two hours prior to the service on Tuesday, August 2, 2022. Memorials may be designated to Debra Johnson Memorial Fund in c/o of Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, IA 50112. Debra was born February 8, 1976 to Dennis and Carol (Davis) Kirby in Grinnell. She worked as a 7th grade science teacher, and taught 3rd and 4th grade for some time. She also worked as a camp counselor at Wesley Woods Church Camp and Twin Lakes Bible Camp. At one time, Debra co-owned a pizza place, also her favorite food. Her most recent job, she managed a Jimmy John's sandwich shop. Debra loved the outdoors. She always enjoyed fishing, and when she lived in Aurora, IL she would seek out small ponds and lakes to cast her line. When she was younger, she enjoyed hunting with her father. Her son, Walid Jr., was her life, and Debra loved attending all of his sporting events. She liked solving puzzles, playing bingo, singing karaoke and spending time with her lab, Zeke. Debra will be remembered for being full of life, as she was able to make anyone smile, lighting up every room she walked into. She knew how to savor the moment and her positivity was inspiring, even when she became ill. Debra is survived by her mother, Carol Kirby of Prairie Village, KS; sisters, Cynthia Kirby of Des Moines, IA, Amanda Kirby of Brooklyn, IA and Rachel Kirby of Brooklyn, IA; her son Walid Johnson Jr. of Peoria, IL; her best friend, Stephanie Tanner of Prairie Village, KS , and her kids Katrina, and Ashia Singh; and many aunts and uncles. She is predeceased by her grandparents, her father, Dennis, her aunt Karen Duncan, Aunt Susie Fellmer and her beloved dog, Bubba.
