Debbie was born the daughter of Milton and Mary Elizabeth Harris Maupin on September 6, 1948, in Chillicothe, Missouri. The family moved to Grinnell in 1953, where she was raised and educated. She graduated with the Grinnell High School Class of 1966. She received her degree in education from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa in 1971. Debbie was united in marriage to Don Charnetski on August 18, 1972, in Grinnell, Iowa. To this union were born their children, Matthew and Samuel. Debbie was a lifelong educator and began teaching at Bailey Park Elementary School in Grinnell in 1972. She continued to teach at Bailey Park School until her retirement in 2001. She enjoyed the outdoors, whether it was golfing, hiking or skiing. She was an avid reader and would spend many hours listening to music, especially the Jersey Boys. She was very involved in knitting, making jewelry, and learning about interior design and decorating. Debbie lived for her sons and was a good friend to many. Debbie is survived by her children, Matt Charnetski of Grinnell, and Sam Charnetski of Cedar Falls, Iowa; and her sister Martha Medlicott of San Jose, California, Debbie was preceded in death by her parents. Memorials may be directed to Bailey Park School or to Grinnell Regional Hospice.
