Deane Kriegel, age 84 of Grinnell, died on Thursday, January 21, 2021 at his home and under the care of UnityPoint Grinnell Regional Hospice. A memorial gathering with the family present will be held from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm on Sunday, February 14th at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. A face mask will be required for those attending the gathering. Deane Raymond Kriegel was born on July 18, 1937 in rural Sheridan Township, northeast of Grinnell, Iowa to Raymond William Kriegel and Elnora Gertrude (Mohrfeld) Kriegel. He was raised on the family farm near Grinnell and graduated from Grinnell High School with the class of 1954. On July 20, 1968, Deane was united in marriage with Helen Carnahan in Gilman, Iowa. The couple lived in Gilman for a year and then moved to a farm in Sheridan Township, where they farmed until 1988. After moving to Grinnell in 1988, Deane worked at Farmhand in Grinnell, then Kiowa in Marshalltown until retiring. In his free time, Deane enjoyed all types of gardening, but especially liked growing vegetables for friends and neighbors. His other passion was woodworking, in which he was quite proficient at making benches. He was also an avid NASCAR fan and always watched races on TV with his beloved dog, Tinker sitting alongside him. Deane is survived by his daughter, Jennifer (Troy) Cummings of Cedar Rapids; and sister, Joyce (Ron) Hauser of Grinnell, Mother-in-law Piccola Carnahan of Rochester, MN, Bud (Bev) Carnahan of Cedar Rapids, Jim (Cheryl) Carnahan of Cedar Rapids and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Ella (Mohrfeld) Kriegel; wife, Helen (Carnahan) Kriegel; sister, Beverly Welter, and father-in law, Frank Carnahan.
