Dean Melvin Smith, 77, of Marshalltown and formerly of Grinnell, died on October 13, 2020, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown.
Private family graveside services and burial with military honors will be held Tuesday morning at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter.
Visitation with the Smith family present will be held from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday, October 19th, at the Smith Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be designated to a charity of the donor's choice.
Dean was born on May 25, 1943, in Millersburg, the son of Melvin and Arlene Horras Smith. He was raised on a farm near Millersburg and was a 1961 graduate of BGM High School. He studied one year at AIB in Des Moines. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1964 and served in the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged in 1967 as a Sergeant.
On March 25, 1967, he was united in marriage to Jane San Miguel, in San Clemente, California. They were married for 53 ½ years and raised four children together.
Dean farmed for many years near Brooklyn, then later owned American Cleaning Systems in Grinnell.
He was a member of many Bible believing churches and was a youth leader and enjoyed teaching the Bible at nursing homes. He enjoyed singing and his favorite hymn was, "Great is Thy Faithfulness." He loved baseball and coached a Little League team. He also loved watching races.
Dean is survived by his wife, Jane of Sun City, Arizona; four children, Deborah (Tim) Blycker, Shelly (Chris) Doubleday, Renae (Noel, deceased) Shepley, and Nathan (Karie) Smith; three siblings, Ken (Donna) Smith, Linda (Ed) Gross, and Rhonda (Charlie) Klaassen; 16 grandchildren, and 1 great-granddaughter.
