David Arthur Rhinehart was born on February 6, 1920, near Tiffin, Iowa. His parents were Lester and Adelaide (Edwards) Rhinehart. He graduated from Victor High School in 1938. Following his education, he managed a portable movie business for a short time. He was united in marriage to Gayle Benton on March 5, 1940 in Lancaster, Missouri. He worked with his dad at a trucking business hauling lime and rock for several years. David was drafted into the U.S. Army in December of 1944. He was located on the Marianna Islands in the South Pacific when President Harry S. Truman ended the war through the use of the atomic bomb. After Japan surrendered, he was shipped to Iwo Jima. He was honorably discharged on January 3, 1946. After the war, David returned home and worked with the family business, Rhinehart's of Victor, doing erosion control work for the Iowa Department of Transportation. He continued with this business for the rest of his working years. David was a lifelong member of the Victor American Legion Post #54, serving as past Commander and Chaplain. He also served as a Victor volunteer fireman. David and Gayle really enjoyed traveling in the later years following his retirement. These trips included such places as: North Dakota, Seattle, the Pacific Ocean, Salt Lake City, Gettysburg, Yellowstone, New Jersey, Niagara Falls, California, Texas and Florida. They enjoyed telling about their adventures on these trips to the family. Even though Dave's vision was impaired over the last few years, he still recognized everyone by their voice and called them by name. He was still able to plant the seeds for the beautiful petunias that he shared with all the family members. His family will miss those beautiful petunias and all the flowers that surrounded his home during these last years. David will be missed by his eleven children, Steven, Russell, Robert, Janet, Jack, Craig, Gary, Judy, Joyce, Jo Ann and Kathy; 23 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; 6 daughter-in-laws; 3 son-in-laws; his sister, Elaine Roberts; his brother, Carl (Lois) Rhinehart; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Gayle Rhinehart; a son-in-law, Ed Moreland; 2 brothers, Clair and Donald Rhinehart; and his parents.
