David Lee Helm, 59 of Grinnell, died on September 1, 2022, at UnityPoint Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

A funeral service has been scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 7, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. Burial will follow at Westfield Cemetery, south of Grinnell.

The Helm family will greet friends one hour to the service at the Smith Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be designated to the David Helm Memorial Fund.

David was born on July 29, 1963, in Red Oak, Iowa, the son of Edwin Alfred and Jane Steward Helm. He was raised in Villisca and was a 1982 graduate of Villisca High School.

On December 23, 1983, he was united in marriage with Joyce Ann Helm, at the First Congregational Church in Parkersburg. The couple lived in Des Moines where he was employed at several places including a window manufacturing company and in the food service industry. They later moved to an acreage near Collins and then to Grinnell in 2006. The couple began Pop Top Vending in 1996 and they retired in 2015.

David enjoyed working on cars and his passion was restoring his 1955 Chevy Bel Air Sedan. He was always active doing things including woodworking and working with his hands. Most importantly, was his time with his family. They were his joy!

He is survived by his son, Jason Helm of State Center; his mother, Jane Helm of Villisca; his sister, Debbie (Keith) Anderson of Villisca; and four grandchildren, Alexis, Alice, Cadence, and James. He was preceded in death by his father, Edwin; and his wife, Joyce in 2018.
