He lived in Grafton, Des Moines, and Redding before moving to Grinnell in the 1940's. He graduated from Grinnell High School with the class of 1951. Dave honorably served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. Dave was united in marriage to Billee G. DeHart on December 9, 1955 at the United Methodist Church in Grinnell. Their marriage was blessed with three children: Nicole, Anjela, and David. They raised their family in Grinnell and Dave was a longtime employee at the United States Post Office in Grinnell. Dave's greatest enjoyment was spending time with his family. He derived much pleasure from holiday get togethers, family meals and gatherings, and attending his children and grandchildren's various sporting events and activities. He was a much beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. Dave also enjoyed having coffee with friends and tending to his garden. He was known for growing delicious tomatoes and received joy from sharing the abundance of his bounty with friends, relatives and neighbors. Dave was a quiet, patient, gentle man whose actions revealed the true nature of his character. He treated people with genuine kindness, courtesy and compassion and believed in helping others. Well into his early 80's he could be seen snow blowing his neighbor's sidewalks and driveways. Dave had an ardent love for his country and family. He was an intelligent man who valued knowledge and education. His reticence belied a sharp wit and wry sense of humor which was a source of delight for his friends and family. The way that he lived his life exemplified quiet excellence. Dave is survived by his wife of 66 years, Billee Abarr of Grinnell; two daughters , Nicole ( Burl) Barnett of Cedar Rapids, IA and Anjela Abarr of Newton, IA; son, David T. Abarr of Grinnell; three grandchildren; Bridgett Schluter of Cedar Rapids, IA; Gage (Crystal) Barnett of Cedar Rapids, IA; and Delaney (Sander) Cissne of Newton, IA; one great grandchild, Jax Schluter of Cedar Rapids , IA; and his half-brothers, Lannie Navratil and Dr. Mike ( Linda) Navratil, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, nieces Diane Grandstaff and Traci Donisi; nephew, Randy Grandstaff; and sisters, Dorothy Nelson and Joyce Elliott.
