Obituary

Darrel Keenan, 93, of Grinnell, died on Wednesday, January 25, 2023, at UnityPoint Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 am on Tuesday, January 31, 2023, at the Grinnell United Methodist Church. A luncheon will follow in the Friendship Center of the church. Private family interment will be at Rock Creek Cemetery near Kellogg.

Visitation will be held prior to the service at the church beginning at 9:30 am.

Darrel Patrick Jr. Keenan was born the son of Patrick Henry Keenan and Gertrude Ione (Andersen) Keenan on September 3, 1929 near Kellogg, Iowa. He was raised near Kellogg and educated at country schools near his home.

Darrel was united in marriage to Dixie Mikles in September of 1951 at the Newburg Church north of Grinnell. The couple was blessed with a son, Dwight, and a daughter, Diane. They lived in Grinnell all of their lives and Darrel was theLead Electrician at Grinnell College for 43 years. He raised German Shorthaired dogs for 50 years and was a member of the German Shorthaired Central Iowa Club and German Shorthaired Eastern Iowa Club. Darrel was a reserve officer at the Grinnell Police Department for 17 years and was a reserve deputy at the Poweshiek County Sheriff's Department. His hobbies were quail and pheasant hunting, driving his scooter to work, dancing, fishing, playing cards, and camping, especially in Prairie DuChien, WI. He will be remembered for his laugh and sense of humor.

Darrel is survived by his wife, Wanda Keenan of Grinnell; a son, Dwight (JoAnn) Keenan of Grinnell; a daughter, Diane (Rod Backous) Keenan of Des Moines, IA; 4 grandchildren, Brooke Burkett, Lindsay (Jason) Shine, Kelsey (Alex) Castell, Jared (Madison) Keenan; and 4 great grandchildren, Madison Schmidt, Quinn Shine, Jayden Shine, Adler Castell, and Baby Keenan due in June. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dixie Keenan; and siblings, Hollis Keenan, Kenneth Keenan, and Donnavee McAllister.
