Obituary

Darlene F. Anderson, age 80, of Grinnell, died on Tuesday, January 19, 2016, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. A celebration of her life will be held 10:30 a.m., Monday, January 25, 2016, at the United Methodist Church in Grinnell with Rev. Dave Crow officiating. Pallbearers are Verne Jarvela, Larry Manning, Joel Kelling, Frank Fowler, Tom Simpson, Dale Selix, and Lowell Bunger. Interment will be at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Visitation will begin at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell and the family will receive friends from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be designated to the Grinnell United Methodist Church and mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family online at www.smithfh.com. Darlene was born the daughter of Walter and Luella (Hopp) Otten on March 24, 1935, in Sioux County, Iowa. She was raised in Sioux County and Milaca, Minnesota respectively, where she graduated from Milaca High School in 1952. She attended beauty school in St. Cloud, Minnesota. Following her education, she worked at Dayton's Department Store in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She was united in marriage to Dennis Anderson on September 4, 1965, at the Milaca Free Church in Milaca. The couple lived in Albert Lea and Lakeland, Minnesota before moving to Grinnell, Iowa in 1969. Darlene worked for Donaldson's in Grinnell for 25 years until her retirement in 1997. She was a longtime member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church and the Grinnell Elks Lodge, where she was a Lady Elks Officer and past chairperson. Darlene had a very strong faith. She also held a special love of flowers, whether it was tending to her flower beds and garden or decorating her home with floral decorations. The couple enjoyed traveling and wintered in Rockport, Texas for the past 16 years. She was an avid bowler and was a member of the local women's bowling team for several years. Darlene is survived by her husband of 50 years, Dennis Anderson of Grinnell; a sister, Pauline (Lee) Schutts of Wilson, Wisconsin; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Betty Eggen.
