Obituary

Danny L. Hathaway, 70, of Grinnell, Iowa, died on Saturday, August 6, 2016, at his home in Grinnell. A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m., Thursday, August 11, 2016, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Rev. James Dotson officiating. Casket Bearers will be his grandsons, Tanner Hathaway, Josh Kriegel, Nick Kriegel, Tyler Hathaway, Brennen Dodd and Jacob Prowett. Honorary Bearers will be Lindsey Kriegel and Drew Dodd. The Marine Corps Honor Squad and the Grinnell Veterans Ceremonial Unit will provide the flag presentation and the military honor at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home beginning 12 noon on Wednesday and the family will be present at the funeral home from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Memorials may be directed to Grinnell Regional Hospice or to the American Cancer Society and sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home, P.O. Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Danny was born on January 9, 1946, in Muncie, Indiana to Arthur and Jeannette Walker Hathaway. The family moved to Marshalltown, Iowa, where he graduated from Marshalltown High School with the Class of 1964. From 1964 to 1968, he served with the United States Marine Corps in Vietnam and was discharged as a Sergeant. In 1966, he was united in marriage to Linda Olson in Kellogg. The couple lived in Kellogg and were the parents of two daughters, Christina and Michelle. He was employed at the Donaldson Company in Grinnell for ten years. He relocated to Goshen, Indiana and married Betty Ernst. He adopted Betty's son James. He worked various jobs, including tool and die jobs for Lippert Components Company and Hathaway Enterprises. Following his retirement, he moved to Grinnell, Iowa to be near his family. Danny was a member of the American Legion and the VFW and was very proud of his service in the Marine Corp. His interests included riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle, family functions, playing fantasy football, NASCAR, and cheering on the Chicago Bears, the Chicago Cubs and the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. Survivors include his children, Christina (Travis) Propst of Grinnell, Michelle Dodd of Newton and James (Melissa) Hathaway of Elkhart, Indiana; nine grandchildren, Tanner Hathaway, Lindsey Kriegel, Joshua Kriegel, Nicholas Kriegel, Tyler Hathaway, Brennen Dodd, Drew Dodd, Jacob Prowett and Amber Wakeman; five great grandchildren, Ava Schwarck, Kaelyn Hathaway, Abbey Simpson, Bradley Wakeman and Madison Wakeman; and one brother, Mike Hathaway. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Steve Hathaway.
