Obituary

Dale Leon Hawn, 83, of Grinnell, Iowa passed away at his home December 27, 2008, from complications of pulmonary fibrosis. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother William, and sister, Neva. He was born October 3, 1925, in New London, Iowa, the son of John Hawn and Edith Beers Hawn. Dale finished Burlington High School in 1943 and joined the US Navy. He served in the South Pacific, New Guinea, 1944-46. He married Lorraine Mae Conn, his high school sweetheart, May 10, 1946 in Ames, Iowa. Dale graduated from Iowa State University, 1950, in Civil Engineering. He was a structural and architectural engineer, retiring in 1987 from Grinnell College. He maintained a private consulting practice until 2007. The last several years he and Lorraine have lived in Seeland Park, a Grinnell retirement community that he helped design. He was a member of the American Legion, the Masonic Lodge, the A.I.C.E and many other professional engineering organizations. He and Lorraine were members of the Grinnell Christian Church. Dale is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Lorraine, his children, John Hawn (Sue), Cedar Rapids IA and Jennifer Cooper (Joel), Scottsdale AZ, six grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be gifted to the Grinnell Christian Church. A memorial service will be held at the Grinnell Christian Church on Wednesday, December 31, 2008 at 10:30 am.
