Obituary

Clifford Duncan, Jr., 82, of Grinnell died December 10, 2007, at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 14, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. Len Eberhart, pastor of the Grinnell United Methodist Church, officiating. Honorary bearers are Jennifer Woerter, Kevin Nagel, Carrie Simpkins, and Scott Akery. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, at the Smith Funeral Home and where the family will be present from 6:30 to 8:00 Thursday evening. Memorial contributions may be directed to Grinnell Regional Hospice. The son of Clifford H. and Hepsie Baugher Duncan, he was born June 30, 1925, in Riverside, California. At the age of 17, he joined the United States Navy during World War II and served in the Asiatic- Pacific area on the USS Cowell. On April 19, 1946, he was married to Barbara Roe, at the Gretna Green Chapel in Las Vegas. The couple moved to Grinnell from California in 1947. He was employed with Armstrong Electric for 15 years and then started his own electrical business, Duncan Electric. He retired about 10 years ago, but continued to do small jobs thereafter for another 5 years. Clifford enjoyed golfing in league, tournaments, and couples tournaments with his wife. He enjoyed the many camping and fishing trips to Minnesota and when he was younger, the many weekend fishing trips to the Iowa River with friends. He also enjoyed both flower and vegetable gardening. Most important to him though was his family, he was a mentor to them and was always helpful in many ways. He was always available to help and had the knowledge to try anything. He was a life-time member of the Grinnell Eagles Lodge and a member of the Grinnell American Legion. In 1986, he went to his 1st ship reunion in Las Vegas. He enjoyed meeting up with old friends and had since then kept in touch with several of them. Survivors include his wife, Barbara of Grinnell; four daughters, Hepsie (Ray) Bywater of Long Island, New York, Dodie (Wilbur) Telfer of Newton, Jackie (Pat) Akery of Brooklyn, and Ann (Chris) Huggins of Siloam Springs, Arkansas; one sister, Freddie Sandune of Kingman, Arizona; four grandchildren, Jennifer Woerter, Kevin Nagel, Carrie Simpkins, and Scott Akery; and eight great-grandchildren, Tyler and Dylan Woerter, Victor, Beau, and Rhett Nagel, and Emma, Carl, and Vann Simpkins. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Merlyne, Annabelle, and Ruby; three brothers, LeRoy, Ted, and Clyde; and two grandsons, Dan Akery and Raymond Joel Bywater.
