Obituary

Chuck was born on March 11, 1955, in Stevens Point, Wisconsin to Charles and Billie Jean Shope Sumner. He was raised in Lee's Summit, Missouri before moving to Grinnell in the late 1960s. He graduated from Grinnell-Newburg High School with the Class of 1973. Following his education he worked for local Grinnell businesses and was employed with the City of Grinnell's Water Department. He was married to Mollie (Buff) Sumner on June 4, 1988 in Grinnell. The couple lived in Kellogg and he worked in the shipping and receiving department for the Maytag Corporation. For the past few months he has assisted Bob Penne with his food service. Chuck was a member of the United Auto Worker's Union #997. He was an avid Green Bay Packer fan and he enjoyed Triumph motorcycles, music, hunting, fishing and raising German Shorthair dogs. He is survived by his wife, Mollie (Buff) Sumner of Kellogg; two sons, Dustin Sumner of Phoenix, AZ and John Sumner of Grinnell; one daughter, Megan Sumner (Travis Augustine) of Iowa City; and three brothers, Gordon Sumner of Kellogg and Greg and Joe Sumner, both of Grinnell. He was preceded in death by his parents. Memorials may be directed to the Charles Sumner Memorial Fund and sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112.
