Obituary

Christine E. Carnes, 71, of Grinnell died on December 25, 2020, at her home. A Celebration of Life service has been scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 29th, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Pastor Walt Claussen officiating. Pallbearers will be Blaise Wiley, Payton Burnett, Adam Olmstead, Cadin Wiley, Brian Horn, and Jeremiah Wiley. A private family burial will follow at the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, rural Jasper County. Christine was born on February 17, 1949, in Grinnell, the daughter of Ed and Ruth Raber Breeden. She was raised in the Grinnell area and attended Newburg Elementary School and later was a 1967 graduate of Grinnell High School. On November 22, 1967, she was united in marriage to Terry Eickelberg, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Grinnell. While Terry was active in the military, the couple lived on several military bases in the United States. Christine and Terry have a daughter (Sonya) together. They were later divorced. Christine returned to Grinnell in the early 1970's, where she had a long career working for G.T.E. While living in Grinnell, Christine had a son (Jeremiah) with Bill Wiley of Cedar Rapids. She was later married to Larry Carnes in Beatrice, Nebraska and the couple lived at Lake Ponderosa in Montezuma. They were later divorced. Christine held a huge love for her family and was very devoted to their well-being. She enjoyed flower gardening, birding watching, and was an avid reader. She was a western movie buff and was a big fan of John Wayne. She loved the holidays and decorating her home during each holiday season. Christine is survived by her two children, Sonya (Brian) Horn and Jeremiah (Micaela) Wiley; 13 grandchildren, Melinda (Adam) Olmstead,, Payton Ronfeldt, Kasey (Clay Lunsford) Ronfeldt, Blaise (Alyssa Allen) Wiley, Payton Burnett, Cadin Wiley, Gavin Burnett, Aryan Wiley, Dalton (Taisha) Wiley, and Alisha, Mikayla, Emily and Candice Horn; six great-grandchildren, Adam, Kyra and Kyle Olmstead, Rowan and Colt Wiley, and Presley Lunsford; eight brothers and sisters, Jim (Cheryl) Breeden, Virginia Breeden, Sandi Bergman, Jeff (Deb) Breeden, Bev (Kenny Quandt) Duncan, Kevin (Lori) Breeden, Eddie (Mary Ann) Breeden, and Jill Breeden. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, John Breeden, a sister-in-law, Debbie Breeden; a brother-in-law, Jim Duncan, a brother-in-law, Paul Bergman; and a son-in-law, Kevin Ronfeldt. Memorials may be designated to the Christine E. Carnes Memorial Fund to benefit organizations of the family's choice.
