Charles Albert Routier, 84, of Grinnell, passed away Wednesday, December 15, 2021 at his home of natural causes. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 21, 2021 at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. Interment will be at Chester Cemetery north of Grinnell. Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday, December 20, 2021 at the Smith Funeral Home and with the Routier family present from 5:00 to 7:00 Monday evening. Charles was born December 4, 1937, in Grinnell to Joseph and Emily (Crawford) Routier. He attended Denver High school in Colorado, and graduated early with the class of 1956. Following his education, Charles farmed for over 60 years, and drove a school bus for the Grinnell Community school district for 45 years. Charles was united in marriage to Helen Jean Schnell on April 28, 1956, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Grinnell. To this union the couple had seven children; Terry, Nancy, Rodney, Linda, Rhonda, Jody and William. Charles enjoyed farming, mowing, maintaining the Rock Creek Grange campground at Rock Creek, bluegrass music, visiting with family, friends and the guys at the bus barn, making pancakes, and watching his grandsons play football. He was active with the farmers associations, the Sonora Grange, and the Iowa State Grange, and a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church in Grinnell. Charles is survived by his six children, Terry (Jill) Routier of Brandon, Iowa, Nancy (Dennis) Moore of Newton, Iowa, Rodney (Charli) Gray of Franklin, NC, Linda (Ken) Hartgers of Rock Creek, Rhonda (John) Moyes of Grinnell, and Jody Routier of Grinnell; 19 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Marion Routier; and a brother-in-law Archie Beasley. He is preceded in death by his wife, Helen; his parents; one brother, LaVerne Routier; one sister, Joanne Beasley; a son, William Routier; great-grandson, Gage McCammant; and a nephew, Jackie Gray.
