Charles was born on September 27, 1920 to the parents of Rollan and Myrtle Palmer Hewitt in Eldon, Iowa. He was raised and attended schools in Eldon.
Charles honorably served in the United States Navy during World War II as a First Class Engineer. In July of 1938 he married Alyce Mitchell, and the couple later divorced. On November 20, 1966, he was united in marriage to Adella Demmel in Ottumwa, Iowa.
Charles spent most of his life working as a mechanic for F.D. Potts Motors in Marengo before retiring in 1986. Following his retirement, he continued to work on vehicles and farm machinery for friends and family.
Charles was a member of the Victor American Legion Harold E. Smith Post, he had a passion for the outdoors, especially camping, hunting, and fishing. His greatest love was spending time with his family, friends, and his dog Joe
Charles is survived by three daughters, Charla Farnum of Eddyville, Iowa, Carole Warner of St. Joseph, Missouri, and Vickie (Fred) Rhodes of Victor, Iowa; his step-daughter; Cheryl (Duane) Hiner of Conroy, Iowa; grandchildren, Jeff (Kris Gibson) Demmel of Homestead, Iowa, John (Wendy) Demmel of Marengo, Iowa, Jennifer (Fred) Philipp of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Joel (Becky) Demmel of Homestead, Iowa, Angela (Michael) Banger of Fairbank, Iowa, Allen Hiner of Williamsburg, Iowa, David Farnum, of Estherville, Donald (Kathy) Farnum of Brooklyn, Iowa, Robert (Krista) Farnum of Eddyville, Iowa, Larry Rohrer of Victor, Toni Rohrer of North English, Traci Warner of Missouri, Nick Warner of Missouri, Rick Warner of Missouri, Benji Warner of Missouri, and several great-grandchildren.
Charles died on Wednesday, May 23, 2012 at Colonial Manor in Amana, Iowa. He was 91 years of age and was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, daughters Judy Meyer, and Cheryl who died in infancy and three brothers, Les, Jay, and Don Hewitt.
