Charles was born the son of Charles Harlan Bryan and Jessie Luella Holland Bryan on October 30, 1931 in Montezuma, Iowa. He was raised in Montezuma and graduated from Montezuma High School with the class of 1949. He then attended William Penn College in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Charles honorably served his country during the Korean War as a corporal in the United States Army. He was united in marriage to Janet Fleener in 1953. To this union were born four sons, Keith, Kyle, Kerry and Kelly. On March 19, 1971, he was united in marriage to Doris Hasselbrink Anderson in Bettendorf, Iowa. The couple resided in Lynnville, Iowa. Charles worked at several locations in the Montezuma and Grinnell area during his life, including the Montezuma Republican, Sutherland Printing, Donaldson's, Skelley Petroleum, Paschal Motor, and the Lynnville-Sully School District. He was a member of the Grinnell Eagles Club, Grinnell Jaycees, Lynnville Historical Society, the Lebanon Masonic Lodge in Lynnville, the Lynnville Lions Club; and the Grinnell American Legion. Charles was a family man and a friend of many. He held a special love for his grandchildren and faithfully supported them in their activities. He was an outdoorsman, who enjoyed fishing, hunting, mushroom hunting, and tending to his garden. His other enjoyments included writing editorials to area newspapers, watching the Chicago Cubs and Bears games, woodworking, and teaching the youth. Charles is survived by his wife of 38 years, Doris Bryan of Lynnville; his sons, Kyle Bryan of Barnes City, IA, Kerry (Marlene) Bryan of Searsboro, IA, and Kelly (Sammi) Bryan of Lynnville; 7 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; his sister, Maxine Metz of Grinnell; and his nephew, Craig Metz of Grinnell. Charles was preceded in death by his parents; and his son, Keith in 1991.
