Cathy Jo Haynes, 72, of Brooklyn, IA passed away on August 13, 2026, at her home in Brooklyn, IA. 

A visitation will be held one hour prior to the memorial service at 10:00 am on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at Smith Funeral Home in Brooklyn, IA. A memorial service will then be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at Smith Funeral Home in Brooklyn, IA. A luncheon will be held at the Michael J. Manatt Center in Brooklyn, IA following the memorial service. A graveside service will follow the luncheon at Sheridan Cemetery.

Cathy was born on November 26, 1953, to Roger and Virginia (Davis) Johnston in Grinnell, IA. On September 7, 1973, Cathy was united in marriage to Gerald Lee Haynes in Pocatello, Idaho. The couple resided in Montezuma for many years before moving to Brooklyn in the mid-90s. To this union, the couple had five children, Kathyrn, Barbara, Josie, Robert, and John. 

Cathy enjoyed gardening and visiting with friends and family. She will be remembered for her passion for cooking and her legendary St. Patrick’s day extravaganza feast of corned beef and cabbage she cooked for her family and friends. 

Cathy is survived by her children, Kathyrn (Randy) McCulley, Barbara (Ben) Nelson, Josie (Keith) Schulte, Robert (Amy) Haynes, and John (Bri) Haynes, her grandchildren, Tyler and Jacob Nelson, Jack and Theo Schulte, Madison, and Kennedy Haynes, and Taylor Haynes, her great-granddaughter, LeeAnn Haynes, her siblings, Sally (Dave) Cook, and Bill (Toni) Johnston, and numerous nieces and nephews. 

She is preceded by her husband, Gerald Haynes, her parents, Roger and Virginia Johnston, and her sister Jolene Johnston.
