Cathy DeMeulenaere, age 96, of Grinnell, died on Thursday, January 28, 2021, at her home under the care of Hospice Of The Midwest. A private family funeral mass will be held on Saturday, February 13, 2021, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Grinnell, with Fr. Ross Epping presiding. Interment will follow at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. The service will be live streamed on the Smith Funeral Home Facebook page beginning at 9:45 am. A public visitation will begin at 1:00 pm on Friday, February 12, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. Her family will receive friends from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm. Those attending the visitation are required to wear a mask and to practice social distancing. Catherine Kelly was the youngest of three daughters, born to John and Mary (Loftus) Kelly on October 14, 1924, in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania. The family moved to Detroit, MI, when Cathy was four. She was raised and educated in Detroit and attended St Joseph Mercy Hospital School of Nursing where she graduated Cum Laude in 1947. It was here she met Dr. John C. DeMeulenaere while he was completing his residency. On July 2, 1947, Cathy and John were united in marriage and the couple made their home in Grinnell. Cathy raised seven children, and later served as office manager at John's medical practice. They were longtime members of St. Mary Catholic Church in Grinnell, and Cathy served on the Altar and Rosary Society, and on the parish finance council. She was also a member of the Marian Study Club, Elizabeth Earle Magoun Club, and Pi Rho Lambda. Cathy enjoyed playing bridge, reading, and spending time in Estes Park, Colorado with the family. Survivors include six children: Diane (Warren) Weber of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Katie (Scot) Rainbolt of Papillion, Nebraska; Ann Marie (David) Cassorla DeMeulenaere of Chicago, IL; John Kelly DeMeulenaere of Grinnell; David DeMeulenaere (Kristine Olson) of Carbondale, Colorado; and Joan (Doug) Stolberg of Naples, FL; 10 grandchildren,15 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Cathy was preceded in death by husband John, daughter Carol, parents John and Mary Kelly, and sisters Eleanor Kennedy (Jim) and Mary Nagel (Ed).
