Obituary

Carroll L. Gerard, 84, of Grinnell died May 24, 2014, at his home. Visitation with the family present will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, May 30th, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Carroll L. Gerard Memorial Fund. Carroll was born February 25, 1930, on the family farm near Montezuma, the son of Homer and Freida McCormick Gerard. He was raised in the Montezuma area and attended school at Montezuma High School. On May 19, 1951, he was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Betty Green, at the Little Brown Church, in Nashua. The couple lived in Oskaloosa for a few years prior to moving to Grinnell in 1958. Carroll was employed with Cunningham Drug for 20 years and with Ron's Yamaha in Pella for another 14 years. He later worked for several years at Grinnell College where he loved working at Darby Gym. Carroll was a very loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He loved to go fishing with his family, including several trips to Minnesota and Canada. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, watching westerns and movies and working in his yard. Survivors include his wife, Betty of Grinnell; two daughters, Deb (Randy) Fifer of Newton and Angie Edgington of Grinnell; two grandchildren, Cameron (Sara) Fifer of Newton and Ashlee (Ali) Fifer of Des Moines; two great-grandchildren, Drake and Delaney Fifer of Newton; one brother, Keith (Sharon) Gerard of Kirkland, Washington; his step-mother, Helen Gerard of Montezuma; and one sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Maxine and Harold Mouchka. He was preceded in death by his parents, mother-in-law, Lillie Green and son-in-law, Ronnie Edgington.
