Obituary

Carroll 'Shorty' Anderson, of Kellogg passed away peacefully on June 27, 2005, two days after his 77th birthday, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. Funeral services for Mr. Anderson will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 2, 2005, at the Kellogg Christian Church with Mr. Matt Siebert, interim pastor of the church and Rev. Carol Myers, pastor of the Sheridan Church near Grinnell, officiating. Organist will be June Gregory. Pallbearers will be Marty Anderson, Bruce Kading, Dale Lenz, Chasu Lo, and Charlie and Jake Manning. Honorary Bearers will be Pete Bonyata, Merl Brown, Al Dee, Jake DeGreef, Jerry Morris, John Soorholtz, Eddie Sweeny, and Carl Vinall. Burial will be in Our Silent City Cemetery in Kellogg. Memorial contributions may be directed to Grinnell Regional Hospice or Kellogg Christian Church. Visitation will be held from 12:00 noon to 9:00 p.m. Friday at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell and where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 Friday evening. The son of Andrew Jay and Maude Estelle Milligan Anderson, he was born June 25, 1928, on the family farm in Jasper County, near Kellogg, Iowa. He was a 1946 graduate of Kellogg High School. On February 6, 1949, he was married to Alice Faye Fair in Grinnell and the couple farmed in Jasper County. Shorty started showing purebred Spotted hogs at the Iowa State Fair at the age of 11 and showed there for over 50 years. After working with his father, he and his brother "Chick" formed Anderson Spot Farms. He loved the purebred business and the friends that he made while traveling to various hog shows and delivering hogs to his customers around the country. He was a member of the Iowa Pork Producers, member of the Iowa Spotted Breeders Association., serving as national director for six years and a member of the Iowa Swine Test Station Board, serving as president for two years. He is also in the National Spotted Swine Hall of Fame and was named Iowa Master Seedstock Producer. In addition, he won countless awards in the show ring. In addition, he was a member of the Farmland Co-op Board, a Trustee for Rock Creek Township, a member of the Elks and Eagles Lodges, and a member of the board of trustees for the Kellogg Christian Church. He loved visiting with people, whether they were farmers, politicians, or people he met while on vacation. Shorty enjoyed all aspects of the outdoors. For 30 years, he and his friends traveled to Montana to hunt deer. He loved fishing and did so in Wisconsin, South Dakota, Lake Superior, and on his private lake located on the land that his great grandparents settled when they arrived from Denmark. Sharing his lake with his family and friends was a great joy to him and Memorial Day was always special, surrounded by his family. His family was precious to him. He adored his wife, who was his teenage sweet heart. His daughters, son-in-laws, grandchildren and great grandchildren were a joy to him, and his values and generous heart will carry on through them. Survivors include his wife, Alice of Kellogg; three daughters and their spouses, Marcia and Bruce Kading of Minneapolis, Jill Anderson of Des Moines, and April and Charlie Manning of Des Moines, three grandchildren, Beth Lo and her husband, Chasu Lo of Minneapolis; Jacob Manning of Des Moines, and Alexander Manning of Des Moines; five great-grandchildren, Ya Shia Lo, Joua Chia Lo, Pen Law Lo, Dey Xis Lo, and Hli Maresol Lo, all of Minneapolis, and two sisters, Juanita Ahrens of Grinnell and June Gregory of Altoona. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Wanda Parsons and Elva Hulse; and two brothers, Wayne 'Chick' Anderson and Vernon 'Cap' Anderson.
