Obituary

The daughter of Harvey Manzel and Harriet Myrtle Black Bailey, Carol was born February 7, 1909, in Bethel Township, Jasper County, Iowa. She was raised in the area and was a graduate of Grinnell High School and received her teaching certificate at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. On May 12, 1933, she was married to Evore W. Sammon, in Oskaloosa and the couple made their home in Grinnell. In 1938, the couple managed the Ewart Store and Post Office. She taught school at Richland #1 and Oak Grove Country Schools and later in Searsboro. She also taught 3rd grade at Parker and Davis Elementary Schools in Grinnell and retired in 1964. After her retirement she enjoyed working at the Grinnell Senior Center. She was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Rebekah Lodge, where she served as Noble Grand and Past Noble Grand, and a member of the MAC Choir. She moved to Granite City, Illinois to live with her son in 1999. Carol was very dedicated to her family and for years helped raise her grandchildren. She was a devoted school teacher and enjoyed staying in touch with her former students. She also enjoyed volunteer work, music, baking, and traveling, and held a passion and love for animals. Survivors include her son, Larry Sammon of Granite City; three grandchildren, Brenda Sammon of Granite City, Natalie Jones of Ocala, Florida, and Glen Sammon of St. Charles, Missouri; two great-grandchildren, Trisha and Shane Jones of Ocala; and one brother, Bernard Bailey of Dana Point, California. Carol died September 25, 2004, at Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City, at the age of 95. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Evore in 1947; and two sisters, Inez Bailey and Mildren Vivian Bailey.
