Obituary

Carl Brown, 85, of Grinnell, died on Sunday, March 2, 2025 at UnityPoint Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

A funeral service will be held 10:30 am, Friday, March 7, 2025 at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. Visitation will be held prior to the service beginning at 9:00 am. Interment will be in Ivy Hill Cemetery in Malcom.

Memorials may be designated to PALS (Poweshiek Animal League Shelter) and mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home and Crematory, PO Box 368, Grinnell, IA 50112. Memories and condolences may be shared with Carl's family online at www.smithfh.com.

Carl Brown was born on December 14, 1939, in Grinnell, Iowa, to Louis Marion Brown and Doris V. (Johnson) Brown. He was raised on the family farm near Malcom, Iowa, and graduated from Malcom High School with the Class of 1958.

Throughout his life, Carl worked as an over-the-road truck driver, beginning his career with Manatts, before eventually owning and operating his own trucking company. His strong work ethic and dedication to the industry were evident to all who knew him.

Carl had a deep love for animals, especially cats. He was known for feeding and sheltering neighborhood cats in need, ensuring they had a safe place to stay. In his free time, he enjoyed collecting guns and attending gun shows, as well as watching classic country western shows.

Carl is survived by his siblings, Roberta Nason of Marshalltown, IA, Barbara Heffel of Greeley, CO, Joann Dearinger of Des Moines, IA, Larry (Judy) Brown of Grinnell, Marion (Betty) Brown of Kirksville, MO, and Ron Brown of Grinnell; his nieces and nephews; and his special friend, Ivy Morelock. He was preceded in death by his parents; his nephew, Timothy Brown in 1990; and his special friend, Sheryl Smith in 2016.
