Robert Morton Dimit was born June 6, 1930, in Taintor, Iowa. He was raised in Grinnell
and he graduated from Grinnell High School in 1948. He pursued his passion for
education at Parsons College, earning a Bachelor's degree in Education, and later
completed a Master's degree in Counseling and Administration from Drake University.
Bob proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army during the
Korean War. He was united in marriage to Susan Muckler on June 22, 1952, in a
ceremony held at Grinnell United Methodist Church. Together, they shared a loving
partnership that spanned more than 72 years and the blessing of two sons, Mark and
Paul.
A dedicated educator, Bob spent most of his life as a counselor and teacher, inspiring
countless students with his compassion and commitment. He served as principal at
Colfax High School, Gilman High School and Washington Elementary School. His
longest tenure was at Grinnell Jr. High School, where he served as a counselor for over
three decades, guiding students with care and wisdom. His dedication to his students
and his community left an indelible mark on those he touched.
In addition to his work in education, Bob was a passionate farmer. He cherished his
Century Farm, a legacy property north of Grinnell originally owned by his uncle, John
and Agnes Petersen. Known for his love of antique tractors, Bob delighted in taking
tractor rides, driving them in parades and attending car races. He also found joy in the
company of his beloved dogs and in raising cattle, embracing the simple pleasures of
rural life.
Bob is survived by his wife of 72 years, Susan Dimit of Grinnell; his sons, Mark (Janet)
Dimit of Grinnell and Paul (Cathy) Dimit of Bondurant, IA; grandchildren, Arteom (Angel)
Dimit, Vlad Dimit, Benjamin (Courtney) Dimit, and Christina (Brian) Stamper; great-
grandchildren, Bentley Dimit, Logan Dimit, Keeana Stamper, Weston Dimit, Braelynn
Etter, Avery Goodwin, and Catalina Reeves; sister-in-law, Sharon Dimit of Ottumwa, IA;
