Obituary

Lawrence Beauregard Battey was born January 11, 1930, at Oscawana on the Hudson, New York to Bryan and Eleanore Starke Battey. His father was Assistant Commissioner of Patents of the U.S. and the family lived in Washington D.C. His father died in 1936 at the age of 38. Bo attended Sidwell Friends School in Washington D.C. with two older brothers, Bryan and Fraser. He attended Westminister School in Simsbury, Connecticut. His mother remarried eleven years later to a Midwesterner moving the family to Oskaloosa, Iowa, where Bo graduated from high school. Bo attended Grinnell College for a short while, and then moved to Boulder City, Nevada, where he worked with his uncle in his photography business and also worked at Hoover Dam as a power switchboard operator. He moved his wife and three children, Bill, Karen and Howard to Grinnell in 1968 to operate Bo Battey Texaco Station, Greyhound Bus Depot and U-Haul Rental. His first wife, Jeanette, died at the age of 43, after being married for 25 years. On April 4, 1980, he married Betty Ann Randell, which allowed them to enjoy their combined families. Together they loved wintering in Scottsdale, Arizona for twelve years, where they met and continue to welcome numerous friends. Bo served on the Board of the Boy Scouts of America, Grinnell Community Theatre, the Grinnell Fine Arts Council, was a member of the Senior Chamber of Commerce, the Elks, Grinnell Country Club and attended the Grinnell United Methodist Church on a regular basis with his wife. Bo wrote 'One For the Money, Two For the Show,' to dedicate the new Grinnell Community Theatre at its opening. His ability to write poetry for many occasions has brought both laughter and tears. Along with his many attributes, Bo will be remembered most as a loving husband, father and stepfather, a caring and 'hands-on' grandfather and great grandfather, a wonderful storyteller to his numerous neighbors, friends and relatives. Bo is survived by his wife Betty Ann of Grinnell; his children, William Battey of Des Moines, Iowa, Karen (John) Lipcamon of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Howard (Cassie) Battey of Andalusia, Alabama; one stepdaughter Leigh Ann (Casey) Meacham of Grinnell; nine grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and one brother, Bryan (Jean) Battey of Ashville, North Carolina. Bo was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Jeanette; and his brother Fraser Battey. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Bo Battey Memorial Fund.
