Billie was born the son of Leroy and Maude (Ballard) Bennett in Monroe, Iowa. He was raised and educated in Montezuma, Iowa. He honorably served in the United States Army during World War II as a cook. He was united in marriage to Gladys Winchester on November 14, 1949, in Montezuma, Iowa and to this union their son Steven was born.
Billie was a member of the Eagles Club and the Elks Lodge in Grinnell. He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, grilling, walking and feeding the ducks at Arbor Lake and Lake Nyanza in Grinnell, and gardening. He was described as being ornery, colorful, caring, and having a keen sense of humor.
Billie is survived by his son, Steven Bennett of Malcom, Iowa; his grandsons, Michael and Kenny Bennett; his great grandsons, William, Zachary and Jacob; his sister, Miladean Garrett of Albia, Iowa; his cousin, Twyla (Chuck) McAtee of Grinnell; his close friends and caretakers, Crystal, Linda and Mariah Young of Lost Nation, Iowa; and his dog, Pandy.
Billie died Saturday, April 18, 2009, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center at the age of 81. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Gladys in 2003.
