Obituary

Bill Weeks, 83, of Grinnell died May 11, 2012, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. A memorial service has been scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 16, at the Grinnell United Methodist Church with Rev. Len Eberhart officiating. Organist will be Terrence Blain and vocalist Lisa Henderson. Other music will be provided by Tim and Patrick Weeks. A family burial will be held on Wednesday at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Visitation with the family present will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 Tuesday evening at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. Memorial contributions may be directed to Grinnell United Methodist Church or St. Francis Manor Activity Fund. Bill was born July 11, 1928, in Indianola, Iowa, the son of Boyd and Ina Kennedy Weeks. He was raised in Indianola and graduated from Indianola High School. He completed his Bachelor's degree at Simpson College in 1950 and later completed his MA degree and Specialist in Education at Drake University. He taught social studies and held some coaching duties in New Virginia, Iowa following his education and then in Grinnell in 1954. He later became principal at the Grinnell Junior High School and later at the Grinnell Senior High School. He retired as an educator in 1969, and began his long-career at Ramsey-Weeks in Grinnell as a realtor. He retired from there in 2008. Bill was married to JoAnn McClymond from 1949 to 1973 and to this union four sons were born, Dan, Tim, Patrick and Jason. On February 14, 1974, he was united in marriage to Joyce Barr-Myer, in Waterloo. The couple had one daughter, Katie. Bill was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church and was active as a trustee. He was a 50 year member of the Masons, a member of the Kiwanis and Fortnightly Clubs, and sang in the men's Glee Club. He was a long-time member and supporter of the Grinnell Golf and Country Club and served as co-chair with his wife, Joy, of the Grinnell College town and gown. He was active in many civic affairs in Grinnell, most notably Greater Grinnell Development Corporation, Grinnell Chamber of Commerce, and Iowa Valley Community College Board. He was a mentor to many people and enjoyed making a difference in people's lives. Always thinking of others he was a proficient fund raiser, he believed in causes larger than self. He was kind-hearted, very sensitive, and deeply committed to his family and much loved by his family. He was competitive as an athlete and loved music. Among his favorite pastimes were golf and reading. He is survived by his wife, Joy of Grinnell; four sons, Dan of Galena, Illinois, Tim (Anna) of Rochester, New York, Patrick (Jeaneal) of Cedar Rapids, and Jason of Iowa City; one daughter, Katie (Kevin) Cook of St. Louis, Missouri; six brothers and sisters, Jerry, Shirley, Betty, Dixie, Judy and Jim; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
