Billy Keith Luther was born on October 2, 1937 to Emory and Hazel (Ringgenberg) Luther at his family dairy farm near Grand Junction, Iowa. Growing up he worked on the farm and always had a love for horses, he nearly burst from excitement when he got his first horse at 10 years old. Bill was an active member of the local 4H and FFA club and graduated from Grand Junction High School with the class of 1955. Upon graduation Bill honorably served in the Iowa Army National Guard and attended Iowa Barber College in Des Moines. He moved to Marshalltown and cut hair at the Mason Temple for several years. During this time he met his future wife, Sharon. Bill was united in marriage to Sharon K. Sefflinga on October 17, 1960 in Albany, Missouri. The couple lived in Garwin, Iowa and then Laurel, Iowa while Bill worked for Fisher Controls in Marshalltown. In 1969 the family moved to Texas to fulfill Bill's lifelong dream of training horses. He was very successful in this endeavor as both trainer and showman of a PHBA National Champion reining horse, Dunny's Peaches. In 1972 Bill and Sharon moved their family back to their home state of Iowa and settled on an acreage near Gilman. At this time Bill began working at John Deere in Ankeny as a machinist. After 24 years of dedicated service, he retired from John Deere in 1998. Throughout his life he remained a very active and esteemed horseman. While he was always happy to be in the saddle himself, he adored watching his children and grandchildren ride even more. In addition to training and showing Bill was also a respected PHBA judge. For many years he judged at Palomino shows, county fairs and open shows. Bill was a hardworking and dedicated family man, with a quick wit, and a gift for telling stories and jokes. He could always be found in the stands cheering on his children and his grandchildren in their various activities. Bill was very laid back and easy going. Sharon loved to redecorate their home and Bill happily obliged, he never complained or questioned these projects - even when he came home to a knocked down wall or a completely gutted room. He enjoyed mushroom hunting every spring and what he found he invited his family over to cook and eat. After retiring, Bill started his mornings off with a trip to the store in Gilman to purchase the daily newspaper and scratch off tickets. He joked, "I made more money in retirement than I did when I was working." You then could find him cooking pancakes and bacon, drinking coffee and working on the daily crossword puzzle. In the afternoons, evenings and weekends you could find him spending time with his family and friends - golfing, fishing and training his horses. He also enjoyed watching Andy Griffith, Old Westerns and cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Sharon of Gilman, Iowa, his children Dawn (Dave) Pyle of Marshalltown, Iowa, Chris (Brian) Deeter of Laurel, Iowa, Charlie (Carrie) Luther of Gilman, Iowa and Todd (Nicole) Luther of Grinnell, Iowa; his stepchildren Nicki (Curt) Smith of Kansas City, Missouri and Terri Stonewall of Keller, Texas; his grandchildren Ashley (Scott) Redding, Brad Osgood, Shelby (Matt) Smith, Carley Hare, Charles Osgood, Justin (Hannah) Aman, Clayton Aman, Cody Aman, Maddie Wiegand, Morgan Luther, Madison Luther, Kaia Hoffmann and Bela Hoffmann; and his great grandchildren Marshall, Miles, Kahlea, Bronx, Emma, Aubree, Chase, Karah and Stetson. He will also be fondly remembered by sisters LaVon Ringgenberg and Jo Zunkel as well as many friends, nieces, nephews and cousins. In death, Bill rejoins his parents, Emory and Hazel, his infant brother, Laverne Dean, his brothers in law Bob Van Pelt, Dean Ringgenberg and Roger Zunkel, his grandson Brett Hare and last but not least, his basset hound, Fred. Bill would always say, "Get in the golf cart, Fred. Let's go for a ride."
